Abell Maryland Real Estate

Abell is situated in the north central area of Baltimore, Maryland. It is one of the important residential communities, in which the grid street pattern was established during the twentieth century. Most of the residential properties in Abell are row houses that are medium and large in size. In 1920s, Abell was renowned for its well built row houses, amenities and indoor sanitary provisions. The houses allowed ample light during daytime and most of them were constructed by Edward J. Storck in the northern blocks.

Abell Avenue is the neighborhood area of Abell community that derives its name from the famous Abell family, who were the owners of the Baltimore Sun newspapers. This family also possessed a large summer estate called Guliford. The southern areas in the Abell community were advertised as being in the Guliford area. The row houses in the southern areas had porch front and bay window.

The Abell community was originally a part of the Huntington tract of 136 acres. This tract was laid out in the year 1688. In 1889, a part of this land was used as a baseball park and it is the first Oriole Park. However, this park was deserted, as it was located far away from the city. In the year 1914, Terrapin Park was established as a ballpark for the Baltimore Oriole Federal League. This park was then renamed as Oriole Park. The park had great impact on the lives of several local children. A new scoreboard was erected in this park in 1937 and it was the largest scoreboard in the world. In 1944, a nighttime fire destroyed the wooden stands and buildings and nearly 1,500 people had to escape from this locality. The Orioles then moved to the Baltimore Municipal stadium. The land was kept vacant and was used as a playground. The commercial and warehouse structures were constructed only in the middle of 1950s. The Barclay school was built in the year 1959.

The Huntington Baptist Church at the northwest corner of 31st street was founded in the year 1836 only as a small Sabbath school. It was a popular landmark and it still exists in Abell. In the early 1800s, people from Ft. McHenry moved to Abell area, as it possessed a healthy atmosphere. The Convalescing soldiers from the barracks attended Baptist services in the neighborhood areas. The Sabbath school was established in an old barrack building. After ten years, James Wilson, a large landowner erected the Huntington Baptist Church. The building was covered with corrugated iron plates.

The East of Barclay Street has numerous frame structures belonging to late nineteenth century. These structures have been remained from the former Victorian Era village of Waverly. The Abell community has a number of small apartment buildings. The Green mount Avenue has both residential and commercial buildings. Some portions of the community’s southeast section have been allotted to light industrial and educational use since 1950. In the northeast section of Abell, Merryman Lane and the truncated Vineyard lane can be found.
