General Information

Fort Meade Maryland (MD) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. The population was 9,882 at the 2000 census. It is the home to the National Security Agency and the US Army base of the same name. In 2007 and beyond, Ft. Meade is looking forward to BRAC and it’s impact on Fort Meade. The 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process(BRAC) will bring even more activities to Fort Meade between 2007 and 2011 including Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). BRAC is expected to bring over 5,000 direct on base jobs and an estimated influx of government contract jobs and supporting infrastructure of over 10,000.

Schools

Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) provide a challenging and rewarding educational experience for every child. The AACPS school system is the 5th largest in Maryland, and among the 50 largest school systems in the country. The district has over 5,000 teachers supporting a comprehensive curriculum from kindergarten through 12th grade. West Meade Elementary School was built in 1964 and is located on Fort Meade Army Base. Students in Pre-K through grade five, and the Early Childhood Intervention program are served in the school's 21 self-contained classrooms and 4 portable classrooms. Shopping

Fort Meade is virtually a city in itself. It consists of 5,415 acres with 65.5 miles of paved roads, 3.3 miles of secondary roads, and about 1,300 buildings. There is a modern exchange mall, bank, credit union, post office, chapels and many other facilities. Located almost midway between the cities of Baltimore and Washington, D.C., its near the communities of Odenton, Laurel, Columbia and Jessup. The Mall in Columbia sports a whooping 5 anchor stores and over 200 retailers total, the mall is part of the succesful Columbia Town Center. Columbia itself contains numerous other shopping centers, and the other parts of the county offer equally attractive shopping.
