Fort Washington, Maryland is an affluent suburb of Washington, DC, and was once home to the main defensive fortification guarding the capitol from invasion. The area houses a population of 23,845 people, and has a median per household income of over $81,000. The area sports many high end amenities, including a private golf, 2 marinas, and public pools. An easy commuting distance from the capitol, the region is notable as a thriving suburb which has experienced rapid growth recently.

Schools

Fort Washington is located in Prince George's County, and thus is served by the Prince George's school system. The majority of students go to 3 specific High Schools, which I will describe later. The school system itself serves over 134,000 county residents and offers a diverse range of classes, including English as a Second Language and Gifted and Advanced Placement classes. Isaac J. Gourdine Middle School is one of the middle schools serving Fort Washington residents. The school serves more than 600 residents and has been remarkably succesful at meeting state assesment score requirements. The school even offers students an IB program. Oxon Hill Middle School is a school serving over 700 students in the Fort Washington area. The school offers a comprehensive range of classes and services for ESOL and Special Education sdudents. View its site for more information.

Friendly High School opened in 1970 and is currently serving more than 1,700 students. The school's sports teams have won multiple state championships, including Basketball, Track, and Football. The school is also home to the highest ranked band program in the county. Coupled with their accademic offerings, the school offers much to prospective students. View its site for more information.

Oxon Hill High School also serves Fort Washington, and current enrolls more than 2,000 students. The school is a science and technology magnet school, offering a school within a school proram that students can apply to, although it is very competitive. Crossland High School is the 3rd school serving Fort Washington, and it serves over 1,500 students from various parts of Prince George's County. The school offers a wide range of upper level classes, as well as a Marine Corp JROTC program, giving students who attend plenty of options. View its site for more information.

Shopping

Fort Washington offers residents some shopping options, but even more shopping lies within the surrounding area of the county, and within Washington, DC. Prince George's County contains large shopping centers in its major population centers. Therea re numerous malls and the area is onveniently located on the border with Washington, DC, offering expensive options, especially for fine dining.
