The Govans community was originally known as Govanstown. It was named after its first renowned resident William Govans, who settled in this area in 1750s. Govans/Mid Govans has close links with York Road, which was established in 1740s. When York was converted to a town, the York road was established to link York and the Baltimore communities. This road was used to bring agricultural products. The high demand for agricultural products required the development of farmland in Baltimore County. As a result, Baltimore County was created in the year 1787.

 

The first cross-road village was Govans which was established in 1783. Govans developed well in 1840 and shops were opened in this community. Churches like the Govans Presbyterian Church, St.Patrick's R.C church and St.Mary's R.C church were established during this period. The shopping core of Govans was established in the 1950s.
