History of Guilford:

Guilford had ten patents granted to British Citizens in the 1600s. Then the entire area was purchased by General William McDonald in 1780 and he named it as Guilford. McDonald family sold it to Arunah S.Abell, the owner of the Baltimore Sun Newspapers in 1872. Later, the Abell family sold it to the Guilford Park Company, which consolidated with the Ronald Park Company in 1911. This company restricted the use of land, in order to preserve the beauty of this neighborhood. It made some improvements for enhancing the comfort of the residents. Olmsted Firm planned the landscape design for Guilford and it valued the existing topography and vegetation.

The popular Sherwood Gardens was established by John W.Sherwood in 1927 in Guilford Baltimore. This garden is now gaining great recognition as the most famous tulip garden. Approximately 80,000 tulip bulbs are planted in this garden every year along with some other spring flowering bulbs.
